Health Insurance in Illinois - HMO’s - Having More for Less

Having an HMO is sometimes an excellent decision based on your families needs. Knowing the advantages and the disadvantages is important in making a qualified decision.

While the politicians in Washington debate the latest intricacies of health care reform, the rest of the country is left to wonder who will help them out when they need to visit a doctor or make an unexpected trip to the emergency room. Figuring out the most cost effective way to provide health insurance for you and your family can be complicated and frustrating. While there are resources available, they are usually weak or very hard to understand. Finding health insurance in Illinois that you can afford and that adequately covers your needs will take a little bit of research, but it is possible.

One of the things that make finding health insurance in Illinois difficult for some people is that there are many different providers and carriers to choose from. There are also different types of plans, some where you pay more up front but less in a deductible, and some where you can only visit doctors in an approved care provider network. If you are interested in paying as little out of pocket as possible, or very interested in keeping the same doctor that you’ve seen for years, you will have to make sure you choose a plan that allows for that.

One of the most common types of health insurance in Illinois is that which is provided by a health management organization, otherwise known as an HMO. The premiums and out of pocket deductible costs are relatively low, however, there are payments expected for any type of specialty service. A drawback of these plans is the expense if you have to go outside of their specific network. Imagine your child having as serious health condition; wouldn’t you like to be able to take your child to a doctor who specializes in that area, without having to worry about having no coverage for out of network doctors? These HMO plans are best for families with small children that are expected to require a lot of regular doctor visits. Although you will most likely have to see medical attention from approved doctors in their network, you will be able to get appropriate care for low cost.
